Palliative Care


What is palliative care?

Palliative care focuses on making patients more comfortable during
their illness by taking a holistic approach to care. Palliative care
might include medical care, pain management and spiritual or emotional
support. Palliative care is also offered to the patient's family to
help them cope with their loved one's illness.


Who should receive palliative care?

Palliative care can help anyone with a serious illness. Unlike
hospice, palliative care is not restricted to patients near the end of
life. Palliative care can be provided at any time, even while the
person is receiving curative treatment.


How do I pay for palliative care?

Palliative care is a covered benefit through Medicare and many private insurances.


When should I begin receiving palliative care?

Palliative care can start as soon as someone is diagnosed with a
serious illness. Palliative care is given at the same time as curative
treatments like chemotherapy or dialysis, so the earlier that someone
begins palliative care, the more relief they will feel. Discuss
palliative care with your doctor, who must write an order to begin care.

INTERACT Program
Interventions to Reduce Acute Care Transfers

As a benefit of your partnership with Passages Hospice, we invite you to participate in the INTERACT Program through the National Institute for Nursing Research and the National Institutes of Health. The INTERACT Program is designed to help reduce the negative results of hospital transfers among your residents, including interruption of care, hospital-related complications and lower resident and family satisfaction.

To help the INTERACT staff identify if your facility is a candidate for the program, please complete the below screening survey. Required items are marked with an asterisk. The INTERACT staff will be in contact with you about potential participation within 2 weeks of completing this form. If you are selected to participate in the project, our staff will assist you in completing necessary paperwork and implementing the project requirements.
